The Senior Scientist – Synthesis Development is responsible for the development of HPLC stationary phases and a variety of analytical and sample preparation-products. Synthesize small-scale exploratory experiments, including  scale-up to pilot and manufacturing-scale processes, planning and developing surface chemistry reactions of silica and polymer particles. Optimization and improvement of existing manufacturing processes through process modeling and DOE. Collaborate with a cross-functional teams of research scientists, quality engineers, manufacturing technicians and product managers when required.

This position reports to the Director, R&D Sustainment and is part of the R&D Department located in Torrance, CA and will be an on-site role.  

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Conduct chemical synthesis experiments generating HPLC stationary phases. Participate in scaling up efforts from small laboratory scale to pilot- and full manufacturing-scale, including process development and related DOE.
  • Provide synthetic and process development support to create safe, cost-effective and efficient technologies involving surface modification of silica and polymer particles.
  • Lead the transfer of R&D projects to production working with both research chemists and the process development group.
  • Support technical, QC, and manufacturing personnel in the transfer, optimization, scale-up, quality control, and troubleshooting of all new production methods and SOPs.
  • Look for opportunities to improve and develop existing manufacturing processes and capabilities by monitoring reaction systems and process control technologies, ensuring batch to batch reproducibility.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Material Science, or a closely related field with 5 years of experience.  Advanced science degree plus 3 years of experience is also acceptable.
  • Proven experience in the operation and configuration of chemical process batch reaction systems including advanced process control technologies.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in synthetic inorganic/organic chemistry with in-depth understanding of surface chemistry modification
  • Knowledge and understanding and modeling of the relevant chemistry reaction mechanisms, including DOE and statistical analysis.
  • Proven experience in chemical and physical material characterization such as elemental analysis, thermogravimetry, spectroscopic analysis, chromatographic characterization, particle size and pore size characterization

The salary range for this role is $98,000 - $135,000. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.

This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
